There are many vitamins and minerals required for proper functioning of our human bodies. Vitamin B3 is extremely important for three good reasons.  Read below to find out!

  1. Energy Metabolism: Vitamin B3 is crucial in the process of converting foot into energy for our bodies.  It is a component of NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate), which are coenzymes essential for various metabolic processes that allow us to break down carbohydrates, protein and fats for energy.
  • A study in 2006 published in the “Journal of Biological Chemistry” highlighted the role of vitamin B3 in the regulation of NAD metabolism.
  1. DNA Repair and Cell Integrity: Did you know vitamin B3 is involved in our DNA repair processes? It helps maintain the integrity of cells and adequate amounts are needed for synthesis and repair of our DNA. All important for proper cell function and division.
  • A research study in 2012 published in the “journal of Investigative Dermatology” demonstrated that there were protective effects with niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) on our DNA repair processes such as in skin cells.
  1. Cardiovascular Health: Vitamin B3 has been shown to benefit cardiovascular health.  It can help by increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good” cholesterol) and can help with reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides.
  •  A trial study published in the “New England Journal of Medicine” titled “Atherothrombosis Intervention in Metabolic Syndrome with Low HDL/High Triglycerides: Impact on Global Health Outcomes (AIM-HIGH)” (2011) investigated the use of vitamin B3 (niacin) in patients with cardiovascular risk factors. It showed potential benefits in modifying lipid profiles. (Lipid profiles include cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides.)

These three reasons, energy metabolism, DNA repair and cell integrity as well as cardiovascular health are all important and require vitamin B3.  It is most preferable to obtain the necessary vitamins and minerals from a healthy diet.  However, in some cases a deficiency may require supplementation. It is always a good idea to check your individual needs with the appropriate healthcare provider.
