What’s the big deal? Why is Posture So Important?

I often hear people say, ‘I know I’m slouching’, or ‘I know my neck is too far forward”’.  I believe these people must innately know that their health and posture is intertwined.

It is a scientific fact that your posture and normal physiology are inter-related (American Journal of Pain Management).

So, how is your posture?  And why is it important?

It is important because it is about thriving and having a life of optimal health and vitality!

Here are some facts about poor posture.  Think – head forward.

For every inch of forward head posture, it can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds.” (Kapandji, Physiology of the Joints, Vol 3) If you are interested in purchasing this book, you can find it on Amazon here.

“Loss of the cervical curve stretches the spinal cord 5-7cm and causes disease” (Dr. Alf Breig, neurosurgeon and Nobel Prize recipient)

My absolute favorite is! “90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine,” says Dr. Roger Sperry, Nobel Prize recipient for brain research.

If your alignment is poor and your mobility is off, how stimulated is your brain?

From a more anatomical perspective, long term forward neck posture leads to “long term muscle strain, disc herniations and pinched nerves.” (Mayo Clinic Health Letter, March 2000)

I believe maintaining proper alignment is important to your health, it is especially important for your brain.  Perhaps it is time to get evaluated and check your neck curve?

I have found some pretty awesome aids that might be beneficial to some people in maintaining alignment, that work very well along with chiropractic care.
